Race HQ in Alicante was the perfect place to watch an incredible finish to 9 months of racing of the Volvo Ocean Race. Dongfeng Race team managed to pull off a very risky strategy by sailing to the other side of the north sea exclusion zones to the rest of the fleet. It was only in the last 10 miles of the race that they took the lead assuring that they had in fact made the right call.
After a quick pack-up in Alicante, I made my way straight to the finish of the race in The Hague, Netherlands. I’ll be based here sailing with Team Akzonobel over the summer as they sail around Europe in a post race tour. Since I stepped on the boat last weekend, I’ve realised how much I’ve missed being on the water. It it also a great opportunity to get out on the Volvo 65 boat with the sailors who have just sailed 45,000 miles around the world in them. All the hours of watching the boats in race HQ can be put into practise.
It’ll be back to the drawing board for whats next come the end of the tour at the end of the summer when we take the Volvo 65 back to its home in Lisbon.
